Who I Am
Hey all! Thanks for being here! My name is Marissa, creator of Academic Anarchy, an advocacy platform committed to raising awareness and providing insights on the realities and misconceptions surrounding child education.
Alongside my husband, we are radical unschooling parents of five incredible kids, ranging from 5 to 16 years old. Our journey into unschooling wasn't where we began, as I once adhered to the status quo, following the path of the rat race without ever questioning it. However, the uncertainties of 2020 led us down a different path. Initially, we thought it was a temporary solution, but as I delved deep into the philosophy of unschooling, my perspective on education was radically transformed.
We decided to unsubscribe from institutionalized education and embarked on a new educational adventure with an entirely fresh perspective. It became clear to me that coercing children into environments that cultivate stress, anxiety, competition, and low self-esteem was not conducive to genuine learning. Kids are natural learners from the moment they are born! What obstructs their innate curiosity is the early separation from their families while subjecting them to analysis, testing, grading, and comparison. They lose their autonomy over even basic needs like eating and using the bathroom, and are forced into a system that prioritizes social hierarchy over their individual personalities and curiosities, sacrificing their childhoods for a hypothetical future.
It has now become my mission to shed light on the harsh realities of the public school system and its inherently flawed and artificial environment that molds our children into uniformed thinkers and workers. I aim to spread the message that living alongside our children, respecting their autonomy, and nurturing their profound wonders and interests in the world is not only a fulfilling and liberating experience, but the path to revolutionize the future our children will inherit. Living in such alignment results in children who are in tune with themselves, embody strong values, and are resourceful through their organic journey of learning. I understand the fears and doubts that arise when considering to veer off the path of conventional standards which is why I am dedicated to helping guide you through the motions to view life with our children through a whole new lens.
Marissa has a background in Psychology studies, as well as independent studies in areas relating to Child Development and Self-Directed Education.
